Assistance Program (SNAP) — are already cutting benefits and raising costs for the more than 40 million Americans who rely on the program every month to put food on their tables.

But the damage doesn’t stop there.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{"url":"https://angelafobbs300576.substack.com/subscribe?","text":"Subscribe","language":"en"}" That’s changing fast. Starting this October, the federal government is slashing its share of administrative funding from 50 percent down to 25 percent — forcing states to cover 75 percent of the cost of simply running the program. And starting October 2027, most states will, for the first time in SNAP’s 60-year history, also be on the hook for a share of the actual food benefits themselves — between 5 and 15 percent, depending on each state’s payment error rate.

For states with the highest error rates, that 15 percent isn’t a rounding error. In 15 states, the SNAP share of the state budget is projected to jump by more than 300 percent. States that can’t cover that through tax hikes or cuts elsewhere will have exactly two options: restrict who qualifies for SNAP, or walk away from the program altogether.

Neither option is hypothetical anymore.

Over 4 million people have already lost food aid

The funding restructuring hasn’t even fully kicked in yet — and the damage is already staggering. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, SNAP participation fell by more than 4.5 million people, or roughly 11 percent, between the law’s enactment and this spring. That’s the steepest drop in nearly three decades — steeper than the cuts of the mid-1990s. Participation fell in every state but one, and dropped by 10 percent or more in 23 states. Arizona alone saw a 55 percent collapse in enrollment as caseworkers buried families in hours-long interviews and paperwork demands designed to push people off the rolls.

Food policy experts are blunt about what comes next. If states can’t absorb these new costs, neither food banks nor existing government programs have anywhere near the capacity to fill the gap. This isn’t belt-tightening. It’s the deliberate unraveling of a program that has kept tens of millions of American families — including more than 800,000 children — from going hungry.

The cuts don’t stop at the water’s edge

While Republicans hollow out food assistance at home, the dismantling of USAID has been quietly killing people abroad on a massive scale.

Researchers have been trying to quantify the toll since the agency was gutted. Boston University’s Brooke Nichols, an infectious disease modeler, built a real-time tracker estimating deaths from the collapse of PEPFAR and TB programs alone — and within months was already counting hundreds of thousands. The Center for Global Development separately estimated that the cuts could contribute to 500,000 to 700,000 additional deaths per year. And a peer-reviewed study published in The Lancet this year — drawing on data from 93 low- and middle-income countries — projects that global aid cuts could cause at least 9.4 million additional deaths by 2030 if current funding levels hold, roughly a quarter of them children under five. If cuts deepen further, that number could climb past 22 million.

These aren’t abstractions. They’re HIV clinics closed in South Africa, malnutrition programs shuttered in the Horn of Africa, malaria treatment that simply isn’t there anymore for kids who need it. The same governing philosophy that says American families don’t deserve a reliable food safety net is the one that decided the world’s poorest children don’t either.

Your Vote From Abroad Counts — Here’s How to Make It Count on Time

Every American citizen living overseas is eligible to vote in the midterms. The process is simple, but timing is everything. So vote — especially if you’re living abroad. You already know firsthand that life doesn’t have to be as hard as it is in America right now.

Request your ballot now. Go to VoteFromAbroad.org and submit your request today. Don’t wait until you’re staring down a deadline.

Choose email delivery, not postal mail. This is the single most important tip I can give you. U.S. postal mail is slow, and a ballot mailed to you the traditional way may simply not arrive in time for you to fill it out and send it back. Request that your ballot be sent by email so you get it quickly and have real time to act.

Send it back electronically if your state allows it. Many states let you return your ballot electronically instead of relying on the mail. No fax machine? No problem — you can fax your ballot without one.

Get help if you need it. Voting from abroad can feel confusing the first time — or even the fifth time. VoteFromAbroad’s Voter Support team offers in-person help, email support, and more. Use it.

Not sure who to vote for down-ballot? Local and state races rarely make national headlines, but they matter enormously. Blue Voter Guide is a great resource to help you make informed choices all the way down your ballot.

We just need change. Real change, this time. It starts with your ballot.

Thanks for reading! stings today: the white moderate as one of the biggest obstacles to freedom. Not the outright bigot — the moderate. The one who preferred a calm, quiet order over real justice. The one who told people who were suffering to just wait a little longer.

I don’t want to wait anymore.

Thanks for reading! Not for America, not for its people, not for the world.

So here’s what I actually want, plainly stated:

I want everyone to have a fair shot at a decent job, a home of their own, the choice to have children if they want them, and good schools for those kids to grow up in.

I want us to actively fight climate change — because if we don’t, none of the rest of this matters. We won’t be here to enjoy it.

I want everyone to live with dignity, and I want us to have equal human rights, full stop. I am so tired of hearing that some people deserve less than others. Nobody is “lesser.” Nobody should be told they need fewer rights.

I want people to have jobs that feel meaningful, not just jobs that keep them alive.

I want everyone to have enough to eat, without it costing a fortune.

I want everyone to have a home, without rent or a mortgage eating them alive. And I want us to stop treating homelessness like a personal failure. It isn’t. It’s a system failure — and we built the system.

I want everyone to be able to see a doctor, get the care they need, and afford their medications, without it bankrupting them or forcing them to choose between health and rent. No one should die or go broke because they couldn't afford medical care.

I want people to have room to think and plan. Right now, everything feels chaotic, and we’re all being fed so much noise and nonsense that it’s genuinely hard to think straight.

And we have to stop electing people who couldn’t care less about anyone but themselves. That starts with more of us actually voting — and fewer of us letting other people decide who leads us.

Which brings me to the part where you come in.

1. Request your ballot now. Go to VoteFromAbroad.org and submit your request today. Don’t wait until you’re staring down a deadline.

3. Send it back electronically if your state allows it. Many states let you return your ballot electronically instead of relying on the mail. No fax machine? No problem — you can fax your ballot without one.

4. Get help if you need it. Voting from abroad can feel confusing the first time — or even the fifth time. VoteFromAbroad’s Voter Support team offers in-person help, email support, and more. Use it.

In that future, citizens become subjects, monitored rather than represented.

Others promote a version of America governed not by constitutional pluralism, but by a narrow religious ideology that would privilege one interpretation of faith over the rights and freedoms guaranteed to every citizen.

Project 2025 provides perhaps the clearest blueprint.

Its goal is not simply changing policies. including those cast from abroad — matter so profoundly. Senators Tom Tillis and John Cornyn announced they will vote to confirm Todd Blanch, claiming they secured “important concessions” from him on the Trump settlement agreement. But as former DOJ Pardon Attorney Liz Oyer explained, those claims don’t hold up.

Thanks for reading! They simply caved. And because they caved, the situation is now worse than before.

What Actually Happened

Blanch signed a memo declaring the $1.88 billion slush fund “dead.” But the memo has no legal force. He cannot kill the fund without Donald Trump’s written consent. The settlement agreement is a binding contract — and contracts can only be modified if both parties agree.

Trump hasn’t agreed. He won’t agree. And just last Friday, his lawyers appealed a court decision to keep the fund alive. Once Blanch is confirmed, nothing will stop him from reviving it.

And that’s only half the problem.

Blanch’s memo says nothing about the immunity provisions — the part of the settlement that shields Trump and his sons from tax audits and government investigations. That immunity is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Last year Trump made over $2 billion. Under this deal, he can simply not pay taxes on what he owes, and the government cannot intervene.

DOJ issued a press release trying to minimize the immunity, but even their narrow interpretation confirms the core truth: Trump, Don Jr., Eric, and the Trump Organization receive a massive windfall at public expense.

Tillis and Cornyn have now blessed the agreement. They even thanked Blanch — the architect of the deal — and cleared the path for other Republicans to fall in line.

Why This Moment Matters

When lawmakers choose loyalty over law, when oversight collapses, and when corruption is waved through without consequence, the only remaining check is the ballot box.

That’s why voting — especially from abroad — matters.

How Americans Abroad Can Make Their Votes Count

Every American citizen living overseas is eligible to vote in the midterms. The process is straightforward, but timing is everything.

1. Request your ballot now.
Use VoteFromAbroad.org to submit your request. Don’t wait.

2. Choose email delivery.
Postal mail is slow. Email ensures your ballot arrives quickly.

3. Return it electronically if your state allows it.
Many states permit electronic return. If you need to fax your ballot, you can do it without a fax machine.

4. Get help if you need it.
Vote From Abroad’s Voter Support team offers in‑person assistance, email help, and more.

5. Use Blue Voter Guide to make informed choices down‑ballot, where races often receive little national coverage but matter enormously.

This Is the Moment

It’s easy to feel like one ballot cast from thousands of miles away doesn’t matter. But history shows otherwise. Overseas votes have swung elections before, and with House control, Senate control, and dozens of open seats in play, 2026 is shaping up to be another razor‑thin year.

A chance only matters if we take it.

Request your ballot.
Choose email delivery.
Return it electronically if you can.
And share this post with other Americans abroad.

Request your ballot: VoteFromAbroad.org

Thanks for reading! people we love and the people we’ve never met — is real, it’s accelerating, and it is reversible. But only if we show up.

The 2026 midterms are one of the most consequential elections of our lifetime, and if you’re an American living abroad, you might assume your vote gets lost in the shuffle. It doesn’t. In race after race, overseas ballots have been the margin of victory. This year, that margin could decide who controls Congress.

Thanks for reading! Here’s the scale of what’s up for grabs:

All 435 U.S. House seats are on the ballot.

35 Senate seats — the 33 regular Class II seats, plus two special elections in Florida and Ohio.

Governorships in 36 states and 3 territories.

Mayoral races in cities across the country.

More than 40 sitting House and Senate members are retiring, opening up seats that have been locked up for years — some of them in places Democrats haven’t had a real shot in a very long time.

Put simply: Democrats have a genuine, achievable path to flipping the House, the Senate, and statehouses that felt untouchable just a few years ago. That path runs directly through races that will be decided by a few thousand — sometimes a few hundred — votes. Ours included.

Your Vote From Abroad Counts — Here’s How to Make It Count on Time

Every American citizen living overseas is eligible to vote in the midterms. The process is simple, but timing matters more than anything else.

1. Request your ballot now. Go to VoteFromAbroad.org and submit your request today. Don’t wait until you’re staring down a deadline.

2. Choose email delivery, not postal mail. This is the single most important tip I can give you. U.S. postal mail is slow, and a ballot mailed to you the traditional way may simply not arrive in time to be filled out and returned. Request that your ballot be sent by email so you get it quickly and have time to act.

3. Send it back electronically if your state allows it. Many states let you return your ballot electronically instead of relying on the mail. Don’t have a fax machine? No problem — here’s how to fax your ballot without one.

4. Get help if you need it. Voting from abroad can feel confusing the first time — or even the fifth time. Democrats Abroad’s Voter Support team offers in-person help, email support, and more. Use it.

5. Not sure who to vote for down-ballot? Local and state races rarely get national coverage, but they matter enormously. Blue Voter Guide is a great resource to help you make informed choices all the way down your ballot.

This Is the Moment

It’s easy to feel like one ballot, cast from thousands of miles away, doesn’t move the needle. History says otherwise. Overseas votes have swung elections before, and with House control, Senate control, and dozens of open seats in play, 2026 is shaping up to be another year where the margin is razor-thin.

We have a real chance to change the direction of this country in November. But a chance is only worth something if we take it.

Request your ballot. Choose email delivery. Return it electronically if you can. And if you know other Americans abroad, send them this post.

Request your ballot: votefromabroad.org

Let’s make this the election where our voices — from wherever we’re living — were the difference.

Thanks for reading!
